Core stages such as design, production, and retail are rapidly evolving toward digital and intelligent workflows. In this process, the upper limit of digital capability is not defined by surface-level tools, but by high-barrier technologies such as underlying physical simulation and geometric computation. These technologies are often consolidated through patents and converted into core technical moats for the enterprise.

Against this backdrop, Style3D has not limited its innovation to the application layer. Instead, it has continued to advance into more complex underlying physical simulation and mathematical geometry optimization, systematically converting key capabilities into a patent portfolio.

As of 31 December 2025, Style3D employed more than 300 people, including 92 R&D professionals who represented approximately 30.5% of the company’s total workforce. Its core technology team includes talent from leading institutions such as Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley, supported by an overseas R&D center in Germany and global academic collaborations. Style3D has also published more than 30 papers at leading conferences and journals, including SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, CVPR, NeurIPS, and 3DV. According to Frost & Sullivan, it ranked first globally among corporate entities by the number of physics-simulation papers published at SIGGRAPH and SIGGRAPH Asia in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

As of 28 July 2026, Style3D held 106 granted patents worldwide, including 58 invention patents and 12 granted in Europe and the United States, with a further 155 invention patent applications pending. These assets support its independently developed 3D garment software and ongoing innovation in physics simulation, digital fabrics, and fashion AI.

The patent family introduced in this issue focuses on a central challenge: dynamic adaptation between garments and the human body. Its representative patent, Garment deformation method based on the human body’s Laplacian deformation (US11704871B2), proposes a garment-driving method based on Laplacian Deformation, enabling garments in a virtual environment to change in real time, smoothly, and with high fidelity in response to body shape and movement.

In essence, this represents a reconstruction of the relationship between garment and body.

In conventional 3D modeling workflows, garment deformation relies on skeletal skinning and binding. Although this method is mature, it carries a very high manual cost: modeler must assign weights point by point, and any mishandling can easily lead to stretching artifacts, collapsed wrinkles, and other unstable results. The process is both time-consuming and difficult to control.

(Traditional 3D garment skinning and binding in a Maya environment. Image source: Bilibili.)

This patent takes a different approach: rather than relying on manual binding, it allows the garment to be driven naturally by the human body. The implementation can be summarized in the following steps:

First, the 3D polygon meshes of the body and garment are input, then discretized and clustered through voxelization to reduce the number of vertices and improve computational efficiency.

Next, the body and garment are treated as an integrated topological system, and the corresponding Laplacian matrix is constructed.

On this basis, the vertices of the body mesh are used as deformation handles, allowing body motion to directly drive synchronized deformation of the garment mesh.

Finally, the deformed simplified mesh is mapped back to the original-resolution space to obtain a high-fidelity final result.

The advantage of this method is that it no longer depends on local weights. Instead, it preserves the naturalness of deformation through integral geometric constraints. As a garment moves, wrinkles, textures, and structural details can be retained to the greatest extent possible, avoiding the rubber-like feel or local tearing often seen in traditional methods.

This ability to let a garment change naturally with the body can be perceived directly in practical use. As shown below:

The same garment can present differentiated yet reasonable fit effects across different body types. Its ease, silhouette, and details change naturally with the body’s structure, rather than being simply scaled or stretched.

At the application level, this technology directly improves the efficiency of digital garment production and the interactive experience. On one hand, it significantly reduces the time spent on skinning and weight adjustment in 3D modeling, greatly shortening the digital garment development cycle. On the other hand, in virtual try-on, e-commerce display, and mobile try-on scenarios, it substantially improves the fit and realism between garment and body, thereby enhancing user experience, reducing decision-making costs, and to some extent lowering returns caused by a mismatch between expected and actual on-body effects.

For Style3D, patented garment deformation is one part of a wider technology stack for digital product creation: pattern arrangement, accelerated sewing simulation, material digitization, rendering, and AI-assisted generation. Together, these capabilities are intended to help fashion teams create structured, simulation-ready digital garments rather than only visual garment images. They also provide a technical foundation for the company’s 3D garment design, virtual try-on, digital sampling, and product-visualization workflows.

From the perspective of patent strategy, this technology establishes an intellectual-property barrier in the critical field of 3D garment deformation, providing core algorithmic support for Style3D’s expansion into frontier areas such as Physical AI, digital twins, virtual livestreaming, and AI-powered film and episodic content.

This article serves as the debut of Style3D’s patent series.
